So let me understand this. A custodial sentence was not ordered because he has demonstrated that they don’t deter him? What kind of arse backwards logic is that?! It would certainly deter him for the duration of the sentence. Being locked in a cell tends to limit one’s opportunities for engaging in dangerous driving and police pursuits. While we’re hardly perfect over here in Canada, I’m seriously risking whiplash from shaking my head reading about the state of the judiciary in Great Britain.

That’s about the long and the short of it.

Lock him up for the full term and it might not deter him, but it will stop him doing it for a good few years!

      Couldn’t be simpler, could it?

I’m not sure why you are suprised, just watch any uk police reality show and the useless punishments just keep coming.

Being well over 40, no accidents, clean licence, maximum no claims, my insurance was £500 on a £1500 mercedes car.

Contrast this with the weekly diet of scrotes caught with no licence (through being banned mainly), tax, mot or insurance handed fines around £150 and it’s quiet obvious that I’m the mug for bothering to be legal.

“it was argued that being locked up had so far failed to stop him re-offending”

Are there any other offences for which one might argue there’s no point locking someone up because they’ll only do it again when they get released? Just to pick a tabloid hysteria hobby-horse at random – can you picture the response on the front of the Mail if a paedophile was given community service on the basis that locking him failed to stop him reoffending?
