If I were a member of Parliament (which I never will – I’ve got too much integrity) I would be worried today.

The people whose duty it is to protect the lives of our illustrious (sarcasm – it’s the lowest form of wit) leaders are only worth a 2.5% pay rise.

They can’t be that good then, can they?

I heard today that our SPP is going next year. This represents a pay cut for most officers at my nick, and we will again start to see officers leave to go to Metrocity.

I remember a May Day demo from 1977 or 1978 where we (the nasty unwashed and normally in confrontation with the police left) had a large banner with a caricature bobby and the slogan “6 pounds now – fight for the right to strike” – this raised a smile from some regular coppers on duty – and when the flat caps saw them smile they quickly shooed them off to a less stimulating area.
