Strathclyde Police have been found guilty of sex discrimination after refusing recruiting applications from males with a particular form of colour blindness that only affects men.

Full story here if you want to read it.

I would have thought, given the criticism of forces for being racist, that the best way to prevent allegations that officers are discriminatory is to employ those that are colourblind.

I think Strathclyde have missed an opportunity here.

So the suspect was an ic something or other going through the lights on green/amber/red in a blue/ green/red/yellow car – hmm…speaking as a shortsighted colour blind male (gosh I’d never realised that makes me handicapped – is there a grant or something?)I’d feel just slightly safer if the average police officer had better vision than me!

Except that these guys were passed medically fit in every way, had excellent eyesight in every way, could distinguish between traffic light colours and met the eyesight standards established by an independent report as being relevant to policing and, if they had applied to other police forces, including the Met, would have been acceptable as far as eyesight goes.
